Mifflinburg FFA and Cumberland County 4-H Top Farm Safety Quiz Bowl
1/9/2013
Harrisburg – Mifflinburg FFA and Cumberland County Team A won their respective brackets at the Farm Safety Quiz Bowl on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the 2013 Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.
The Mifflinburg FFA team is comprised of Blair Digan, Olivia Dietrich, Trevor Clouser and Ashley Confer. The Cumberland County Team A was comprised of Rachel Cohick, Nathon Repetz and Kirsten Martin.
Dr. Dennis Murphy has been in charge of the contest since it began 13 years ago. Semi-finals for the Quiz Bowl are held at Ag Progress Days in Rock Springs Centre County each summer, and the top four teams from the FFA and 4-H divisions are automatically qualified to compete at the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
The contest consists of three rounds. A “team round” with five questions worth 10 points each. This section contains questions with a multi- part answer and allows team mates to interact to come up with the correct answers. There is also a “round A” with buzzer questions worth 5 points each, and a “round B” with buzzer questions worth 10 points each. At the end of the three rounds the team with the most points is deemed winner.
The Department of Agriculture coordinates the event and this year’s sponsors include Farm Family Insurance Company, CNH North America, Inc. Westfield Insurance, Ag Choice Farm Credit, and MidAtlantic Farm Credit.
Christina Becker and Phil Pitzer read questions to the teams throughout the competition, and Dr. Aaron Yoder and Dave Hill assisted with scoring and time keeping.
The Pennsylvania farm Show is the largest indoor agricultural event in the nation, featuring nearly 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and 300 commercial exhibitors. The show runs Jan. 5-12 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg. Admission is free and parking is $10. Visit www.farmshow.state.pa.us for details
