Suffolk, Southdown Take Top Honors as Two Day Breeding Sheep Show Ends

Harrisburg - The two-day open breeding sheep show at the 2012 Pennsylvania Farm Show ended on Saturday, Jan. 14, with the selection of the Open Supreme Ram and Ewe.

The Supreme Champion Ram came from the Suffolk breed, and was exhibited by Christopher McCauley of Atglen, Chester County. The Supreme Champion Ewe was a Southdown, exhibited by Derek Wilson of Titusville, Crawford County. The Supreme Ram and Ewe caught the judge's eye and bested 13 other champions to win the Supreme Champion titles.

Wool breed judge David Cook from Wakeman, Ohio, and meat breeds judge Kyle Thayer of Cummington, Mass., sorted through more than 400 of 13 breeds before selecting the animal of the show.

The breeds included: Cheviot, Corriedale, Dorset, Hampshire, Merino, Montadale, Natural Colored, Oxford, Shropshire, Southdown, Suffolk, All Other Breeds Wool and All Other Breeds Meat.

In addition to awards for Champions and Reserve Champions, the Nicole Knepp Memorial Plaque was awarded to Sarah Vanvakias of Boyertown, Berks County, for the best fleece in the Corriedale breed. Christopher McCauley, of Atglen, Chester County, was awarded the Ford Cooper Memorial Trophy for the first place Suffolk Flock.

The 2012 Pennsylvania Farm Show is the largest indoor agricultural event in the nation, featuring nearly 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and 300 commercial exhibitors.
