Franklin County Girl Flies to First during Farm Show Flag Race

Harrisburg - Heidi Coy of Chambersburg, Franklin County, tore up some serious turf and times during the Flag Race event held on Wednesday, Jan. 11, during the 2012 Pennsylvania Farm Show.

Riding her speedy mount, Pepper, Heidi was able to clench a first place position with a time of 8.530 seconds during the Youth Division of the Flag Race.

Exhibitor John Messersmith of Dover, York County, also took home top honors in several events during the competition. With a time of 8.270 seconds, John was unbeatable in the Open Flag Racing division. His horse, Titan's Tessy, led him on another winning run with a time of 8.382 seconds during the Senior Flag Racing Division.

Jeff Asper of New Oxford, Adams County, teamed up with John during the Relay Flag Race to secure a blue ribbon with a combined time of 9.612 seconds.

Several different events, including barrel racing, were also a part of the Flag Racing event.

The first place winners for the event are:

Flag Racing - Open Division: John Messersmith, Dover, York Co.

Flag Racing - Senior Division: John Messersmith, Dover, York Co.

Flag Racing - Youth Division: Heidi Coy, Chambersburg, Franklin Co.

Relay Flag Race - Open: Jeff Asper, New Oxford, Adams Co., and John Messersmith, Dover, York Co.

Barrels - Augusta Spandler, Newville, Cumberland Co.

 The 2012 Pennsylvania Farm Show is the largest indoor agricultural event in the nation, featuring more than 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and 300 commercial exhibitors. The show runs Jan. 7-14 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg. Admission is free and parking is $10.
