Harrisburg – Charles Martin of Conestoga, Lancaster County, was named winner of the inaugural Thumbprint Cookie Contest at the 2012 Pennsylvania Farm Show on Saturday, Jan. 8.
Sixty-one contestants participated in the contest sponsored by Christina Maser Pantry, a PA Preferred™ company.
The five judges evaluating the taste and presentation of the thumbprint cookies were Debbie and Ed Andrus of Geneva, Ohio, Debbie Felak of Lancaster County, Fred Lutz of Allegheny County and Pam Paletta of Washington County.
Mr. Andrus said he was “surprised at the creativity” of each of the cookies.

First Prize Thumbprint Cookie Recipe
Christmas Jam Thumbprint Cookies
1 cup Butter Crisco
½ cup brown sugar
3 large eggs separated
2 tablespoons water
1 ½ teaspoons vanilla
¼ teaspoons salt
2 cups flour
2 cups finely chopped pecans
1 cup homemade Christmas jam (cranberry/strawberry jam)
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Beat shortening and brown sugar in bowl add egg yolks, water, vanilla and salt. Beat until well mixed. Gradually add in flour while beating on low. Beat egg whites in a small bowl. Roll dough into 1 inch balls, dip in egg whites and then chopped nuts. Place on a baking sheet. Use your thumb to make a hole in the middle of each cookie. Fill each cookie with jam. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes. Recipe makes four dozen cookies.
The 2012 Pennsylvania Farm Show is the largest indoor agricultural event in the nation, featuring more than 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and 300 commercial exhibitors.
