Harrisburg - PJ Mullen and Steve Kassimer, or Braskey, co-hosts of The Morning Zoo radio show, won the coveted silver platter in the PA Preferred Best Burger Showdown on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at the 2011 Pennsylvania Farm Show.

The State College team won with their "Steagle Burger," a mixture of the Steelers and Eagles because Braskey is from Pittsburgh and PJ is from Philadelphia. Their recipe used secret ingredients brie cheese and Madeira wine to out-grill the competition.

The contenders in the showdown were Nancy Ryan and Newman from Harrisburg's BOB 94.9 Nancy & Newman in the Morning. Their burger, the "Crunchburger," used secret ingredient bunny salt, a mixture of salt and seasoned salt.

"I tried to keep the burger simple," said Nancy, "like Newman."

During the showdown audience members were entertained by all four radio hosts as they made jokes about each other and their cooking skills. PA Preferred representative Lela Reichart served as emcee of the contest and provided beef industry facts and preparation tips as the chefs cooked.

Judges of the showdown included WTAJ-TV Altoona news anchor Amy Mearkle and WHTM-TV Harrisburg anchors Valerie Pritchett and James Crummel. Burgers were judged on taste, appearance and showmanship. Contestants tried using flattery and bribery to sway the judges' opinions.

The contest was organized by the Pennsylvania Beef Council and the PA Preferred branding program. Giant Food Stores provided two pounds of 90 percent lean ground beef for the contest. Both teams received ribbons and copies of a healthy beef cookbook.

The Pennsylvania Farm Show is the largest indoor agricultural event in the nation, featuring nearly 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and 290 commercial exhibitors. The show runs Jan. 8-15 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg. Admission is free and parking is $10.
