Harrisburg - Sally Reinoehl of Schuylkill County won $500 for first place from among 57 entries in the Pineapple Upside-Down Cake Contest on Sunday, Jan. 9, at the 2011 Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.

The top three winners with a 9 x 13-inch cake received a cash prize, and a $100 award to the winner of the round cakes.

Deb Walker of East Berlin, Adams County received second place and $100. Coming in third place and winning $50 was Angie Shaw of Harrisburg, Dauphin County. Fourth was Brenda Moore from Mt Wolf, York County and fifth was Debra Martin Berkoski from Conestoga, Lancaster County.

Heidi Givler of Hamburg, Berks County won the round cakes division.

Judges included Angie Davis, Deb Telak, Jeff Altmyer, Judy Kennedy and Domenic Boiello.

Areas that are evaluated include overall appearance, consistency, flavor, moistness, texture and aroma.

The winning recipe is:

Pineapple Upside-Down Cake
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoon light corn syrup

Place all ingredients in small sauce pan. Heat until sugar is melted.

3 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoon vanilla
½ teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon baking power
2 cups sugar
1 cups sour cream
2 ½ cups flour
½ teaspoon baking soda

In large bowl beat eggs and sugar until thick and lemon colored. Beat in oil, sour cream and vanilla. Combine dry ingredients in bowl. Add to egg mixture. Mix well.

Pour syrup mixture in 9 x 13-inch greased pan. Place 12 slices of pineapple over syrup. Pour batter over pineapples. Bake for 50 minutes. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 min. Flip over on plate. Decorate with maraschino cherries.

The Pennsylvania Farm Show is the largest indoor event in the nation, featuring nearly 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and 290 commercial exhibitors. The show runs Jan. 8-15 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg. Admission is free and parking is $10.
