Harrisburg – Megan Anderson of Schellsburg, Bedford County, won Grand Champion honors in the Junior Market Goat Show Saturday, Jan. 8, at the 2011 Pennsylvania Farm Show.
A very active 4-H member, Anderson, 15, has been participating in the Farm Show for many years. She was “shocked” by her big win this year. She will also be exhibiting a Junior Market Lamb on Sunday, Jan. 9.
Cousins Valerie and Logan Svonavec were awarded Champion and Reserve Champion Heavyweight honors. Valerie was later chosen for the Reserve Grand Champion Market Goat.
Judge Bronc Flemming of San Angelo, Texas, evaluated the junior market goats. He was very complimentary of the quality of goats exhibited, and especially grateful for the tremendous class of kids. He encouraged youth to stay evolved in livestock programs.
Goats are evaluated on muscle, appearance and structural conformation. This year, 189 total entries entered the ring, and the top 48 will be selling in livestock auction on Tuesday.
