Lancaster County Woman’s Apple-Blueberry Pie Takes Blue Ribbon at the 2011 PA Farm Show

Harrisburg - First-time contestant Helena Dueck of Ephrata, Lancaster County, came out on top with her apple-blueberry pie in the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie contest on Saturday, Jan. 8, at the 2011 Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.

Dueck bested 80 unique pies, judged by Barbara Davis, Carl Meiss, Noah Dibler Gorman, Lilli Ann Kopp and Debbie Chappell.

Pies were judged on overall appearance, filling (including consistency, doneness, moistness and flavor), creativity and crust (including color, flavor, texture and doneness).  Each judge thoroughly tasted each pie to determine the first place winner.

Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs President Jim Davis explained that all Farm Show entries qualified at county fairs. Davis has been to all of the state's 114 fairs, adding that "each and every fair is different in its own way."

The winners received a cash award along with a ribbon. Dueck received $160, while second place, Lorrie Rauch of Berks County, received $100.
