Somerset and Westmoreland County Youth Exhibit Grand Champion Swine Honors

Harrisburg – Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding presented Hannah Rohrer of Somerset, Pa., the Grand Champion title in the Junior Market Hog Show on Monday, Jan. 11, at the 2010 PA Farm Show in Harrisburg.

Rohrer, with her 267-pound crossbred market hog, outshined 347 youth swine entries from across the state to win her first Grand Champion Banner. She has exhibited at the Farm Show for seven years. A member of the A Cut Above 4-H Club, this excited 14-year-old received this prestigious honor with her homebred market hog, named Shakira.

Sean Gallagher, 18, of New Alexander, Westmorland County, took Reserve Grand Champion Junior Market Swine honors with his 266-pound crossbred market hog, called Buddy. He is a member of the Extreme Stockmen 4-H Club and has been exhibiting here for two years; however this marks his first win at the Farm Show.

For the second consecutive year, Judge David Walter from Warren, Ind., evaluated the market hog entries exhibited by 4-H and FFA youth from across the state. This year’s swine show topped participation from last year’s show with 19 new exhibitors, six purebred divisions and a highly competitive drive of crossbred swine. Before naming the Grand Champion, he commented “This show is all about the kids and the quality has greatly improved, since last year”.

Walter evaluated the hog’s on balance, muscling, finish, structural correctness and soundness.
