1/9/2010

Harrisburg – Jack Tickle of Saltsburg, Westmoreland County stole the show in the poultry division at the 2010 Pennsylvania Farm Show on Saturday, Jan. 9.

“The competition is always good at the Pennsylvania Farm Show,” said Tickle, though he took home numerous first place, reserve champion and champion awards. Paul Kroll of East Aurora, N.Y., Rick Porr of New Cumberland, Pa. and Jamie Matts of Harpursville, N.Y. teamed up to judge this year’s poultry contest.

Reserve Supreme Champion went to a Rhode Island Red Single Comb Clean Legged Bantam, exhibited by Justin Ward of York, Pa.

Also held on Saturday, and announced just before the Best of Show Poultry, was the Youth Poultry Showmanship Contest. Twenty-three youth competed in five different age divisions by answering questions about their bird.

“We have to name body parts, talk about the breed and discuss any diseases,” said Christopher Rob, winner of the 17-18 year old showmanship division. “We also have to put the bird in the cage and take it out, head first so as not to break any feathers.”

Showmanship judge Paul Kroll congratulated all of the contestants on a great job. “I’ve judged a lot of showmanship contests, but I have never come across an entire group with perfect scores,” he said of the senior division.

Age Division winners are:
9-10 year olds: Will Kitsch, Mohnton, Berks Co.
