HARRISBURG – Jeremy Mock’s 95-pound crossbred topped 160 other goats, taking Grand Champion Junior Market Goat on Saturday, Jan. 10, in Harrisburg at the 2009 Pennsylvania Farm Show.
Mock, 17, of Williamsburg, Blair County, and a member of the Williamsburg FFA Chapter, has been exhibiting livestock projects through the 4-H and FFA programs since he was eight years old. Mock was ecstatic when he was given champion honors for his prized goat, “Bubba.”
Valerie Svonavec, of Rockwood, Somerset County, showed the Reserve Grand Champion Junior Market Goat.
Judge Terry Burks of Bowling Green, Ky., evaluated each goat on overall confirmation including muscle, leanness and structural correctness for a quick-paced three hour competition.
“These goats are the tool to develop these young people,” commented Burks. “Each of you should be proud to raise livestock, especially goats, which is an industry that is here to stay.”
