HARRISBURG – Twelve-year-old Joey Espey of Scottdale, Westmoreland County, won Grand Champion Junior Market Swine, Monday, Jan. 12, at the 2009 Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg. Espey topped 328 other hogs with his 276-pound Crossbred.
At the end of the 8-hour show, Judge Dave Walter of Warren, Ind., announced that he was “very pleased with the championship drive.” He went on to say “I have found an extra special hog that exhibits the best flow from head to tail and is stout-made throughout.” The crowd roared as the Westmoreland County 4-H’er was then presented with the championship banner.
Espey, a member of the Mountain View 4-H Club, has been showing at the Farm Show for five years. Nonetheless, he was more than delighted to have his first championship Farm Show title.
Kelsey May, 17, of Mill Run, Fayette County, took Reserve Grand Champion Junior Market Swine with her 278-pound Crossbred hog. May is a member of the New Horizons 4-H Club.
