HIGH SCHOOL RODEO STARS WRANGLE UP THE WINNINGS
1/14/2009
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania High School Rodeo brought an excited crowd on Saturday, Jan. 10, to the 2009 Pennsylvania Farm Show. With nearly every seat full, spectators watched as Pennsylvania’s youth participated in events such as bull riding, barrel racing, calf roping, goat tying and much more.

When competing the in the Pennsylvania High School Rodeo Association, these youth compete against riders from all across Pennsylvania for the top spots. To qualify for the national competition, a rider must be ranked in the top four in point standings. For many of the riders, this may be the first time they have ridden in front of such a large crowd.

Chambersburg’s own cowgirl, Kaylia Albright, rode to victory in the Poles event on Saturday night, giving her even more points to add to her score as the Pennsylvania High School Rodeo Assoc. Poles leader. She also took home a first in the Breakaway event earlier in the day.

Kesley Pontius, a cowgirl from Watsontown, Pa., took home two wins in the Goat Tying event on Saturday and is the current PHSRA leader for the Goat Tying event. She also received third place in a very competitive Barrels event and a fourth place in the Poles event that evening.

In the Junior Division, Amanda Golkosky of Acme, Pa., won two first place awards in Junior girls Goat Tying on Saturday, as well as first in the Junior poles event. She currently stands as the PHSRA second place leader in Junior Girls Goat Tying.
