Cash prizes total nearly $10,000
HARRISBURG –Nancy Zook of Jobstown, N.J. and her registered Quarter Horse Little Bit, won the novice title at the United States Team Penning Association event, held at the 2009 Pennsylvania Farm Show.  Ike Weikert of Gettysburg, Pa., won the open division.
Zook’s fourth year at the event finally secured her first win, after last year’s second place, Zook took home $2,040.
Weikert’s first year at the event, won $1,305.60, for securing the winner’s circle.
“This is a really nice event,” says Weikert. “It’s really luck of the draw, you get picked on a team and have to adapt to their style of riding, and be willing to change your own.”
Weikert has also won the 2001 World American Quarter Horse Show, 2008 Kentucky State Fair and Coor’s Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.
Riders in team penning work with their horses’ talent and teammates’ assistance.  In each round, three randomly chosen riders must work together to pick out three designated calves out of a herd of 30.  They only have 75 seconds to separate the three cows and herd them into a pen.  Spectators quickly realized how challenging the task was.
The U.S.T.P.A. event is a qualifying show to go to national finals in Amarillo, Texas.  Horses and riders traveled from all over Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, New Jersey and Florida to compete.
